Every December, Regent Street transforms into one of London's most magical sights, its sweeping curve lit end to end beneath a canopy of light. It was here, in 1954, that London's Christmas lights tradition began — a response to post-war complaints that the city looked drab over the festive season. Local retailers arranged the very first display, featuring angels positioned as if playing trumpets, and the sight was such a success that other streets, including nearby Oxford Street, soon followed suit.

More than seventy years on, Regent Street still leads London's festive calendar, its lights switched on each year at a grand ceremony that's become a tradition in its own right.
