Embroidered Ornament – London Phone Box
Embroidered Ornament – London Phone Box
Few objects say "London" quite like the red telephone box, now recognised the world over as one of Britain's great design icons. It began life in 1924, when architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott won a General Post Office competition to design a standard kiosk for the capital. His domed cast-iron creation, the K2, first appeared on London's streets in 1926 — Scott had actually proposed silver and blue, but the GPO insisted on red to help it stand out.
A decade later, to mark King George V's Silver Jubilee, Scott designed a smaller, lighter version, the K6, which went on to become the most widely recognised model of all, with over 20,000 installed across Britain by 1940. Most have long since gone out of use, but around 2,000 remain protected as listed structures, still standing proudly on street corners as one of London's most photographed sights.
This embroidered ornament captures a touch of that classic red charm, a lovely addition to the tree each Christmas.
