Glass Ornament - Cheyney Court
Tucked into the grounds of Winchester Cathedral, Cheyney Court is one of the most photographed buildings in the city — a striking half-timbered structure with three overhanging gables, dating back to the 15th century. Its name comes from the Norman-French word "chêne," meaning oak, a nod to the days when the court was originally held beneath an oak tree.
The building once served as the seat of the Bishop of Winchester's secular power, functioning as his court-house, and the Bishop held judicial authority over much of the city right up until 1835. Its distinctive timber-framed upper floors, oversailing the stone ground floor below, remain one of the finest surviving examples of medieval domestic architecture in England.
This little glass ornament captures a touch of that medieval charm, small enough to tuck onto the tree or slip into a stocking.
