Glass Ornament - Pilgrims' Christmas (Building)
Tucked into the southeast corner of Winchester Cathedral Close stands Pilgrims' Hall, believed to date from around 1308. Its name comes from a suggestion that the building once sheltered pilgrims travelling to the shrine of St Swithun, though the hall's real fame lies overhead — its timber roof is one of the earliest surviving examples of hammer-beam construction in England, complete with carved wooden heads, one thought to depict the young King Edward II.
Today the hall forms part of the Pilgrims' School, where it's still used for assemblies, concerts and exams, carrying on centuries of daily life in one of England's most historic corners.
This little glass ornament captures a touch of that medieval heritage, small enough to tuck onto the tree or slip into a stocking.
