Winchester Cathedral is the longest medieval cathedral in the world, stretching 170 metres from its west front to the Lady Chapel at the eastern end — longer than two football pitches laid end to end. Its origins reach back to 1079, when the Norman bishop Walkelin began building on the site of the old Saxon minster, consecrating the new cathedral in 1093 and transferring the relics of St Swithun to their new home.
Centuries of alterations followed, carving a soaring Gothic nave out of the original Norman stonework, yet the Norman transepts and crypt survive largely unchanged to this day. In the early 1900s, the cathedral itself nearly collapsed under its own weight until a diver named William Walker spent years working underwater to shore up its waterlogged foundations, saving the building for generations to come.
This mug brings a piece of that remarkable history to your morning cup, making it a lovely everyday memento for anyone who loves Winchester, or a thoughtful gift for a visitor to the city.
